Carlota is a self-confident teenage girl who decides one day to research the broad subject of sex and write about it in a red diary. She discusses a variety of related topics with friends, family, and teachers - from sexual organs to hormones, pregnancy, and STDs - and details her findings within her journal. Interspersed are narratives of her daily life, her own sexual experiences, and the high drama that ensues as she navigates the waters of teen romance.
Lienas has written an engaging story that also serves as an excellent resource for young readers who may not know how or where else to find this information. The only real issue I had with the book was that I couldn't tell where it was located. It seemed that the story was taking place in Barcelona, Spain - Peninsular colloquialisms were used, and Carlota's boyfriend from the Netherlands came to town for a weekend swim meet.
Why would the author use Mexican statistics, wouldn't Spain have plenty of stats to include in her story? Was this an attempt to make the book more relevant to readers in the Western Hemisphere?
